Stan's one year update

I stopped by Stan's house tonight to see what his tank looks like a year later, here is a video for everyone's viewing pleasure. He has switched his metal halides bulbs to 400 watt Radium 20K on IceCap ballasts. He is supplementing with Super Actinic VHO's on the 180 gallon. One of his frag tanks is lit by eight T5's and the other is powered by the 120 watt Evolution 20K LED.

Signature Series Aquarium Moonlight from R2

If you need a lightweight and durable blue LED lighting unit then the newer R2 signature series moonlights are perfect for you. “They utilize ultra blue LEDs spaced at intervals of 2 inches to ensure complete coverage resulting in a beautiful shimmering moonlight effect. These compacts are designed to be installed in the same manner as regular aquarium lights, above the acrylic or glass cover. The compact size allows for the R2 Signature Series lights to easily sit beside conventional daylight lighting systems.” These work great with the R2 controller for true more simulation. These come in sizes of 24″, 36″ and 48″ (with the 48″ version being the newest) and retail between $19-70. If you haven’t looked into these yet now is the time to do so to get your fish and corals in the mood.

Lumen Bright Hybrid Lighting Unit Combines MH, T5 and LED

A new hybrid lighting unit that pairs CoralVue Lumen Bright Metal Halide reflectors with two banks of T5s and LEDs for moon lighting. This combination is not a radically new idea, but it is the first time that a reflector of this calibre (e.g. Lumen Bright, Lumenarc, Lumen Max) has been integrated with supplementary light sources at a commercial level.



The T5's are angled, reducing light spill from the halide and directing the T5’s output into the tank. A total of four T5 tubes are used (two on each side of the Lumen Brights) and the ballasts are integrated inside the unit. Metal Halide ballasts are sold separately, but this a good thing given the bulb-ballast preferences each aquarist has. The pendant / hood is not the most attractive, but skinned in a wood box shell and you have a simple, relatively plug-and-play floating canopy with enough light intensity for any Acropora. No word on price yet.
